Below you will see a link to our new 2011-2012 Essential Learning Skills. These skills are aligned with our new Common Core Standards.(Standards are the skills that we teach) All of these skills will be assessed this year and are on the report card. If you have had a child in school before you will notice that there are a lot of skills that we used to teach that are no longer in our curriculum (time, money, calendar etc...) TN is one of many states who have adopted the new common core standards. The common core standards allow us to focus on the foundation skills and go in-depth with those skills rather than introduce the skills but not expect mastery. I will of course still do calendar time each day and talk about time, money and other skills but we will not be spending a lot of time focusing on these things. These skills will be introduced later in your child's school career. The common core standards mission statement is below:
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
Please take a moment to look through our Essential Learning Skills (Goals). Please remember that this year, Kindergarten is the only grade who has adopted the new standards. (Next year, when your child goes to 1st grade, the 1st grade team will adopt the new standards, the same goes with 2nd grade-12th grade) Your child will be the 1st class to graduate with the new standards. All students who are currently in grades 1-12 will graduate with the TN State Standards.
This is the link to the Common Core Standards. Go ahead and become familiar with these standards. This will give you a better understanding of what your child will be learning throughout his or her school career. http://www.corestandards.org/

I am in my 9th year teaching Kindergarten and I absolutely love it! I am always looking for fun and exciting ideas to share with my kiddos! I am grateful that I get to go to "work" everyday and hang out with 5 and 6 year olds! I am so blessed! I have an incredible family and I recently married my best friend! Life is great!!
